Transport

1. What form of transport do you usually take?

Whenever I travel, I tend to take the subway, because it’s reliable and punctual…The bus is handy too…If I take the bus, I can admire the view or watch people passing by. But it sometimes takes hours to get from A to B because of bumper-to-bumper traffic…

2. Do people use public transport where you live?

I’d say people in Korea don’t tend to use public transport that often. I mean, there are so many private cars on the streets instead… In fact, a recent survey showed that it’s common for a family to have two private cars…Wherever you go in Seoul, there are heavy traffic jams…

3. What are the benefits of public transport?

Well… There are lots of advantages of public transportation…it’s time efficient… The subway is very punctual since it always arrives on time and it’s not only very fast but also reliable. It’s also inexpensive…. I heard it’s almost five times cheaper to take public transport than to use a private car…

4. Are there any problems with public transport?

Um… Although public transport is fast and reliable, it does have a few disadvantages… The primary disadvantage is that during rush hour, it gets really packed. In fact, there are times when you can’t even get on the subway due to the massive amount of people…

5. Do you think riding a bicycle is useful?

Yeah, I’d say so. Riding a bicycle helps maintain good health and contributes to the reduction of air-pollution in the city, too, I guess... More and more people nowadays are riding bikes in Seoul. The government has also built several bicycle lanes and parks to boost people’s interest in bicycles…

6. Does your country have traffic issues?

Yeah, Korea has several traffic problems, like many other countries… For instance, Seoul has serious traffic congestion throughout the whole day, especially at rush hour… So Seoul is suffering from high number of traffic accidents. That said,  the level of casualties is relatively low, thanks to strict regulations.

7. What kinds of measure should be taken to solve these issues?

We can take some measures to tackle the issue… I suppose the government should improve the current public transport system... They should lower fares and develop more bus routes and subway stations to encourage people to use public transport more often… Plus, bus lanes, traffic congestion fees or a system that restricts certain people from driving on certain days could be conducive to solving traffic problems.
