Part two: describing places

In Part Two, you might also be asked to describe places. For example:

1. Describe a historical place in your country.
   1. Where it is
   2. What it looks like
   3. Who usually goes there
   4. And explain why it is important.

2. Describe a tourist attraction in your country.
   1. Where it is
   2. What is there
   3. Who usually goes there
   4. And explain what is good about it.

3. Describe a room in your house where you often spend your time.
   You should say:
   1. where exactly the room is in your house
   2. what the room looks like
   3. why you often spend your time there
   4. and explain what you would change about that room.

4. Talk about an interesting place you’ve travelled to.
   1. When you went there
   2. Who you went with
   3. What you did there
   4. And explain why it was interesting.

5. Describe a place of natural beauty you remember visiting.
   You should say:
   1. where it is
   2. what it looks like
   3. what you did there
   4. and explain why this place is memorable.

As with other Part Two questions, a helpful way to improve your mark is to learn adjectives to describe places. This is because, unlike nouns and verbs, adjectives are remarkably flexible and can be used to describe all sorts of different places. Like questions about objects, it’s also fairly easy to adapt a presentation on a certain place to answer different questions: a tourist attraction, a historical place, and a place where you spend your free time could all be the same location, for instance.

OK, well my house is quite small so there aren’t many rooms to describe, but I’m gonna talk about my bedroom, which is where I spend most of my time.z

My room’s upstairs, next to my brother’s room, but his room is much more sizeable than mine. We moved in when we were fairly young, I was maybe 4, and my brother got that room because he was the oldest, my sister didn’t want the smallest room, and I wasn’t bothered, so I got the tiny bedroom.

Even though the room isn’t spacious, it feels light and airy because there’s a huge window, and all my books are spread out on the windowsill. To the left of my window is a wooden wardrobe, and to the right is a chest of drawers and some shelves with framed photographs on top. There’s a sort of sea blue carpet and the walls are beige… It sounds bizarre but it works well.

I suppose I hang out there a lot because it’s quiet, so there’s a great atmosphere for working or reading, and it overlooks the garden, which is pretty and calming I guess. And… even though I’m quite chatty, I need to spend time alone to feel energised, so my room is the perfect place to recharge my batteries.

I reckon the only thing I’d change is… Well it would be good if the room was larger, although I wouldn’t want it to be too big, because at the moment it’s quite cosy, which I appreciate. Anyway, if it was more sizeable I could maybe have space for more books and even a rug. I’ve always wanted a rug, I dunno why.
