1. What are the advantages of
living in big cities?
Right… Well I guess there are several benefits
to living in urban areas. I mean, big cities tend to have good transport links,
so… It’s easy to get around. You’ve got the subway, a handy bus transport
system, stuff like that. Plus… In built-up areas there’s usually a more
developed cultural life, like, there are more museums and cinemas, which can
make life more stimulating. In my case… I live in Seoul, and I’m never short of
anything to do here… So, basically, there are various advantages to living in
big cities.
2. What do you think of living in
rural areas?
OK… I suppose there are pros and cons. I mean,
in terms of positive aspects, country life tends to be less stressful cos the
competition isn’t as fierce as in cities, which is beneficial for your mental
well-being. That said… there are usually poor transport links, meaning it takes
ages to get anywhere, and life is often more tedious since there normally
aren’t many places to hang out or things to do. For example… one of my friends
lives in a sleepy town just outside of Seoul, and he often complains about how
boring life is there. So… I guess there are benefits and drawbacks.
3. Do you think urban drift will
continue in the future?
Well… Yeah, I think so. I mean, at the moment,
people want to live in cities for all sorts of reasons. For instance… People
move to cities to take advantage of a wider range of job opportunities, and
it’s especially crucial to have a stable income these days cos of rising living
costs… Another example is that in urban areas there tend to be higher quality
educational and health facilities, and both of those are significant factors in
leading a successful life. Personally, many of my friends’ families have lived
in the countryside for generations but they’re now moving to the city for those
reasons. So… I think this trend will continue in the future.
4. What measures can be taken to
tackle the population imbalance?
Hmm… That’s a tough one… I guess there are
various solutions. I mean, the government could invest more money in the
agricultural industry so that people return to farm work. Farming is maybe no
longer a secure way to earn a living, but with some government subsidies, it
could be more viable. Next… Perhaps businesses could relocate to rural areas.
That way, company workers would move away from cities and the population would
be more evenly distributed. So… there are several measures, I think.
