   < Sample answer >

1. Is reading as pleasurable in digital format?

Well… Personally, I don’t find it as enjoyable. E-readers are certainly handy devices because they’re so portable, I mean you can carry them around with you wherever you go… But I prefer printed books… In my opinion, the reading experience isn’t just about the words – it’s about the feel of the book in your hands and the scent of the pages… So I think reading is more pleasurable in printed format.

2. Do you think bookshops will survive the digital revolution?

Sure… I mean, I think there’ll be fewer bookshops in the future because they have to compete with online bookstores, which are often cheaper, and e-books, which can be downloaded and read immediately, sometimes for free… But there will always be people who want to support bookshops, either because they appreciate the atmosphere of bookstores or because they prefer reading in printed format… So yeah, I think bookshops will survive the digital revolution.

3. How can we encourage children to read books?

OK… When it comes to children, two key influences are parents and teachers… In terms of parents, they can perhaps buy books for their kids and read to them, or make them read aloud… That might encourage an interest in reading. And with regard to schools… Reading hour could be made a compulsory part of the curriculum, and reading could be taught in an engaging way so that children don’t get put off… So those are a few solutions.

4. Should children read aloud when they are reading books?

Er… I suppose it has various advantages, but reading quietly is fine too. In terms of the benefits of reading out loud… It could improve children’s pronunciation and help them to memorise new vocabulary, which is especially useful when learning foreign languages… But sometimes if you read aloud you don’t engage with the content… So basically, both are fine.

5. Why do some people dislike reading?

It’s hard for me to answer because I’m a bit of a bookworm, but… I suppose it depends on personality… For example, if you have a short attention span, you might find reading boring. And because reading is a solitary activity, outgoing people might dislike reading… Those sorts of people might prefer more dynamic activities like team sports. So those are a few reasons.

6. Do you think reading is important?

Absolutely. Reading is important for various reasons… I mean, through reading non-fiction, we can gain new information about history, culture, politics, stuff like that… And through reading fiction, we can stimulate our creativity and imagination, and even find inspiration… And of course reading gives us the chance to unwind… So yeah, I think reading is crucial.

7. Do you think a book club is a good idea?

I think it depends on the person… I mean, it’s important to read at your own pace and not to rush through a book, because otherwise you might not enjoy it or learn anything from it… Book clubs can put pressure on members to finish a certain number of books per week or month, which can make people read too quickly… But on the other hand, participating in a book club can make you engage more with the content and think more carefully about your opinions of the book so that you can express them more convincingly… it can also be rewarding to share your opinions of the book and listen to other perspectives. So basically it depends…

8. What types of people like reading?

That’s a tough one… It’s difficult to generalise but I’d say that introverts and thoughtful people tend to enjoy reading more, perhaps because it’s a solitary activity that requires deep thought and consideration… I think creative types like artists and writers enjoy reading, too, because they can find inspiration for their own work… So maybe those kinds of people enjoy reading.

9. What types of book are popular among children in your country?

Several genres are popular, I think… Kids don’t usually read long novels because they have a short attention span…I suppose children often read adventure stories, fantasy novels and fairytales because they’re engrossing and appeal to their imagination… For example, the Harry Potter series was extremely well-received in Korea… So those are a few genres that have enjoyed significant popularity in Korea.
