[Part two: describing objects]

Another common topic for Part Two is objects. Below are some examples:

  1. Describe a something you received as a present.
    You should say:
    - what it is
    - who gave it to you
    - how you felt when you received it
    and explain whether it was a good present or not, and why.

  2. Describe your favourite possession.
    You should say:
    - what it is
    - what you use it for
    - how long you have had it
    and explain how you received it.

  3. Describe something you want to buy.
    You should say:
    - what it is
    - why you want to buy this object
    - how often you think you will use it
    and explain what you will use it for.

  4. Describe something you bought but were disappointed with.
    You should say:
    - what it is
    - why you wanted to buy this object
    - where you bought it from
    and explain why you were disappointed.

  5. Describe a piece of technology you like to use.
    You should say:
    - what it is
    - what you use it for
    - how long you’ve had it for
    and explain if you would like to buy another, and why.


When describing objects, you can always describe the size, weight, colour, texture and material. This means that if you learn a few impressive words to explain these details, you can easily boost your vocabulary score for any presentation about an object. It’s also very easy to describe the same object for different presentations if you lie – including for the questions above!


물건에 대해서 묘사할 때는 크기, 무게, 색감, 질감 그리고 재료에 대해서 얘기할 수 있습니다. 즉, 이러한 세부 정보에 대해서 묘사 할 수 있는 몇 가지의 인상적인 단어들을 배워둔다면 물건에 대한 시험문제에서 쉽게 어휘 점수를 높일 수가 있습니다. 게다가 거짓말로 대답을 한다면 위의 질문들과 같이 여러 질문에서 쉽게 한가지의 물체로 전부 대답할 수 있습니다!

The first thing that popped into my head was a handbag, so I’ve chosen to talk about that.

It’s quite sizeable, somewhat chunky, and fairly hefty, I mean weighty. In terms of texture, it’s really smooth but also durable. Also… it’s blueish, maybe navy blue.

My mum gave it to me as a birthday gift. She’s normally quite generous but I wasn’t expecting to receive a bag as exquisite as this one. She gave it to me on my birthday, and then we had a small birthday bash in a local restaurant and I took the bag to show everyone. They thought it looked really stylish.

I was overjoyed when I received it, really over the moon. I’d been kind of frustrated because my old bag was really tiny and worn, so I’d been needing a new one for a while. Actually that’s why it was such an appropriate gift, too.
